Rathedaung, Arakan State: A man from Rathedaung Township has been detained since August for remarrying without permission from the authorities and was released only after he paid Kyat 100,000, said a friend of the victim on condition of anonymity.

The victim was identified as Kala Meah (50), son of Shaeb Meah from Dunsay Para of Rathedaung Township.  His wife died of malaria four years ago and left behind six children. He was having problems raising the children, so he sought permission to remarry from authorities but was not permitted.

In August 2008, he married a woman without informing the authorities. But Nasaka learnt of the marriage.

In the first week of September 2008, he was arrested and taken by Nasaka personnel to camp No. 21 of  area No.9, where he was severely beaten up to extort money.

He was released on September 20, after he was made to pay Kyat 100,000, said a local elder requesting anonymity.
