Maungdaw, Arakan State: A youth in Maungdaw Township was arrested by Burma’s border security force, Nasaka on July 26, for having an affair with a girl and intending to marry her, said a close friend of the victim on condition of anonymity.
The victim is identified as Nur Alam (22), son of Motiur Rahman, from Naribill west village of Nasaka area No.6, Maungdaw Township.

Nur Alam has had a relationship with the girl for a long a time after approval of parents from both sides.

He had submitted an application to the Nasaka a year ago for permission to marry after approval of both the parents. He did not get permission because he is poor and was unable to pay bribe to the Nasaka, said a local elder.

However, on July 26, he decided to go to Naribill Nasaka camp with his fiancée for permission. But he was arrested by Nasaka personnel before reaching the camp. The girl managed to flee but the youth was taken to the camp and detained. He is still under detention.

According to a relative of the victim, he was severely tortured in the camp for not paying money even as his family members are starving as they have no rice at home, said a villager.

Besides, the victim’s father is also absconding to avoid arrest by Nasaka personnel who went to his house looking for him.

“It is natural for young men and women to be in love. Why does the Nasaka forcibly create obstacles for only the Rohingya community?” asked a youth preferring not to be named.

A local businessman said, “It is a method used by Nasaka to extort money from the Rohingya community.”
