Teknaf, Bangladesh: A Rohingya’s body was found on the shore of Bay of Bengal near Shamlapur yesterday.


Most fishing boats from Shamalapur, which went to the Bay of Bengal for fishing yesterday are missing and have capsized in the rough sea following a monsoon storm in the Bay. One fishing boat carries five to seven fishermen, said Abu Alam, a fishing boat owner from Shamalapur.

Most of the fishermen managed to swim ashore. But, some fishermen are still missing in the Bay. Two bodies were washed up on the shore of Shamalapur under Teknaf police station and found by some fishermen in the evening, said Abul Kasem, another fishing boat owner.

The villagers of Shamalapur rushed to the spot and identified one as the body of a Rohingya fisherman and another was that of a Bangladeshi, he added.

The dead are:  Hafez Ahamed (40) and Asiur Rahaman (35).

Earlier, six Bangladeshi fishermen’s bodies were recovered on the shore of Shapuridip under Teknaf police station.

Around 50 fishing boats with 300 fishermen onboard went missing in the sea near Baharchara of the Teknaf coast on July 15. Of them 50 fishermen were missing in the Bay of Bengal according to Mohamed Hafiz Saifullah, Chairman, Baharchara Union of Teknaf.
