Leda, Bangladesh: A refugee was killed and 27 injured in a road accident on Cox’s Bazaar-Teknaf Road on November 22, at about 9 am, according to a refugee from Leda un-official refugee camp. 

The dead refugee was identified as Ali Zuhar (35), son of Amir Zaman from the Leda unofficial camp.  He was the father of four children. The jeep met with an accident while it was going to Teknaf from Leda with passengers.

The accident occurred while the vehicle was going to Teknaf from Leda with passengers and its brakes failed.  One refugee died on the spot, and 27 were injured.  The refugees were going to the Teknaf land port for work. The refugees do not get ration from any quarter. So, they have to works outside the camp, said a close relative of one of the victims. 

“The wife of the victim Ali Zuhar was crying and inconsolable and at a loss how she would survive with her four children,” said a relative.

An eyewitness said that the driver of the passenger jeep failed to control the car and it turned turtle. The driver ran away to avoid arrest.

The body of the refugee was taken to Teknaf General Hospital for postmortem.

Eight seriously injured refugees were sent to Cox’s Bazaar General Hospital for treatment and 11 were sent to Teknaf hospital. However, later, the five severe cases were sent to Chittagong Medical College Hospital, said another refugee from the camp.

Police from Teknaf police station and camp police went to the spot and started investigations, said a refugee leader from the camp.

Those who were sent to Cox’s Bazaar hospital for treatment have been identified as Shabbir Ahmed, Saddam Hussain, Ms Gul Bahar, Rahamed Ullah, Nur Islam, Mahabul Alam, Abdu Shukur and Ali Mullah.
