Chittagong, Bangladesh: A two-day (from January 8 to 9) expert-level bilateral maritime boundary meeting between Burma and Bangladesh ended without any fruitful result. But, Bangladesh and Burma on January 9, agreed in principle to resolve their arguments on maritime boundary through bilateral negotiations, maintaining a balance between the principles of equity and equidistance, according to an official source.

Maungdaw, Arakan State: The Burmese Army’s engineering unit, brought to Maungdaw Township for supervising border fence construction, tortured fishermen and extorted money from them on December 29 alleging that they had sold fish to buyers on the River Naff, said a close relative of an arrested fisherman.

Maungdaw, Arakan State: Burma’s border security force (Nasaka) is indiscriminately collecting toll from villagers, while the engineering army unit, which came to Maungdaw from other towns to monitor the erection of the fence along the Burma-Bangladesh border, is using forced labour of villagers of Maungdaw Township, said a local schoolteacher on condition of anonymity.

Dhaka, Bangladesh: A seven-member delegation led by Director General (DG) of Bangladesh Rifles Maj Gen Md Mainul Islam left Dhaka for Burma on January 9 to discuss border related issues with Burma authorities, said a BDR press release.

Chittagong, Bangladesh: The Qulkhwani (Praying and Quran reciting)  of Ms. RC Jabina, a former school Senior Assistant Teacher (SAT) of Maungdaw Government High School was held on  January 9 morning at a rented house Road # 14, B-Block, Changaon police station, Chittagong, said her elder son Naing Win Tun.
