Maungdaw, Arakan State: A huge consignment of drugs (Yaba) was seized in the three mile outpost of Maungdaw on March 18, at about 7 pm, said an official source.

On being tipped off, officials with Burmese border security Force (Nasaka) checked a truck heading from Buthidaung to Maungdaw with cargo and passengers. They found a huge consignment of drugs (Yaba) in the truck, the source said.

The drug consignment was worth around eight million kyat, said an officer in the raid.

But, the drug trafficker could not be arrested, said an officer from Maungdaw police station.

According to rumours in Maungdaw,” The drug trafficker and the owner of the consignment is Daw Nan Nyunt, the wife of Aung Myo Lwin, the Immigration officer from special gate of Maungdaw exit and entry, who sent the drug consignment by ship from Akyab to Buthidaung.  Then it was carried by Ko Poe Chey, a daily labour and hailed from block one of Maungdaw who received 30,000 Kyats to take it to Maungdaw by car.”

While the Nasaka searched the truck, Ko Pow Chey jumped from the truck and fled, said a passenger who was also coming from Buthidaung in the same truck.

According to an officer from Maungdaw, “Most of the officers and their families with their collaborators are involved in the business drug and gambling to earn easy money.”
