Buthidaung, Arakan State: A Buddhist monk was arrested and a monastery was destroyed in Buthidaung Township on August 23 by Buthidaung police, according to a Buddhist community member in town.

The Buddhist monk, U Kaymathayra (46) has one year of monkhood and stays in the monastery in Badagar village tract, Myachaung village (Rakhine Village) of Buthidaung Township.

A section of policemen from Buthidaung raided, arrested the monk and destroyed the monastery on August 23, said the local from Rakhine community from Badagar village tract.

“We don’t know why the authorities arrested the monk and destroyed the monastery,” he said.

The villagers of Myachaung village and village headman went to the Buthidaung police station and paid bill bond security for the monk and took him back to the village on August 25, he added.

“Now, we have built a temporally monastery of bamboo and thatch near the old monastery. But, we don’t know how long it will be like this. This is the only monastery and we need it,” said a village elder.
