Teknaf, Bangladesh: Three Rohingya boatpeople, plus a Bangladeshi broker, were arrested by Teknaf police from Bahar Sara on January 9 at midnight, said a local resident from Teknaf.

The arrested have been identified as broker Abdur Rashid (40) of Shapuri Dip, Abu Yousuf (20), son of Noor Mohamed, Abdul Majid (33), and Ibrahim (22). All four of the men hail from Maungdaw South.

Nearly 100 boatpeople were trying to depart from the Bahar Sara seashore when Teknaf police got information and rushed to the spot. Most of the boatpeople could avoid being arrested, but three boatpeople, including the broker, were arrested during the operation.

After arrest, the men were brought to Teknaf Police Station for further investigation.

During the police investigation, the arrested broker gave a statement that he was employed to send boatpeople to Malaysia through the sea-route.

Teknaf police have filed a case against the arrested boatpeople and the broker, and sent them to Cox’s Bazaar Jail.

In a similar incident, two other brokers named Habib Ullah and Rashid Driver of Naitong Para of Teknaf took 20,000 taka from over 100 Rohingya boatpeople including Bangladeshis, according to an official.

The official also said that Rohingya people seek to cross the Burma-Bangladesh border to be sheltered by locals, and boatpeople give 200 taka to spend a night.
