Mithu Choudhury Guwahati, June 9: Five persons were killed and 21 others were injured when ULFA militants detonated a timer device in the heart of the city on Friday evening.  The blast came a day after four serial blasts rocked Assam on Thursday evening. Friday’s blast ripped apart a market area in the Tarun Ram Phukan road in the Machkhowa region at around 4:10 p.m.    Three of those killed have been identified as Abdul Latif, Puton and Sujit Rai (12). Rai, a minor from Kumarpara area of the city succumbed to his injuries in the Guwhati Medical College Hospital.  The bomb was planted under a storage bin near the vendor’s association office in the busy Machkhowa vegetable market. According to some of the eyewitnesses, the effect could have been even more devastating had the explosion occurred a couple of hours back when there was a huge rush in that particular spot.    The sudden spurt of violence triggered by the outfit for the last couple of days may mar the prospects of the release of five top ULFA leaders before direct talks between the outfit and the Centre.  According to an intelligence source, arrested ULFA leader Mrinal Hazarika confessed of mooting plans of a series of subversive activities across the state beginning June 9 till 11 evening.  The injured shifted to Guwahati Medical College Hospital have been identified as Mohd Ali (10), Majran Begum (35), Samir Ali (25), Julhaz Ali (22), Pratap Deka (35), Bapan Deka (35), Amod Ali (20), Bura Sutradhar (27), Rinku Basumotary (25), Mohan Hazarika (35) and Abdul Kalam (25).Mazril bibi(35),Rabia Pathan(25),Abdual Kalam(35),and an unkown(16). Most of the injured hail from Dhubri and Barpeta district of Assam.
