Ukhiya, Bangladesh : A trawler carrying goods including fertilizer worth Taka six million which got stranded on the sea beach in the Bay of Bengal on its way to Burma , was looted by local Bangladeshis.

The trawler was being used to smuggle 250 tones of fertilizer and other commodities to Burma around midnight on November 24. The engine of the trawler, however, grounded at an emerging Char while crossing Baila Khali coastline of Ukhiya upazila of Cox’s Bazar district, said Issaque a villager.

The smugglers were transporting the fertilizer from Chittagong to Burma , local people said.

The trawler with its 65 horsepower (hp) engine could carry 250 tones of goods but the engine stalled, local people added.

The tide pushed the trawler to the beach. The smugglers fearing arrest left the trawler and fled. This was the cue for local people to loot the goods it was carrying.

According to police, the looters might have taken it as a privilege to take away all goods including the engine and other sailing equipment of the boat.
