Cox's Bazaar, Bangladesh: An engine boat and 180 sacks of fertilizer were seized by the Bangladeshi Navy yesterday when it was being smuggled to Burma .

Following a tip off navy personnel led by Commander Masud Zaman, at about 2 p.m. yesterday seized 180 sacks of fertilizer from Ali Akbar Bolir Ghat of Kutup Dia in Cox's Bazaar district, sources said.

During the raid the smugglers jumped into the sea and fled. No one was arrested.

The fertilizer and the engine boat were handed over to the police station, said a local fertilizer trader in Cox's Bazaar.

During the monsoons, the farmers in Arakan State , Burma are in need of large amounts of fertilizer. Burma is facing a crisis in the availability of fertilizer due to insufficient supply by the ruling junta, said a farmer of Maungdaw town.

The quality of the fertilizer of Bangladesh is better than to those of fertilizer of Burma . So, Burmese farmers prefer the Bangladesh fertilizer, he more added.

Taking advantage of the shortage, smugglers in Bangladesh are cashing in on the situation while Bangladeshi farmers face a shortage, said a local farmer in Cox's Bazaar.

Though the Bangladeshi concerned security forces have been trying to halt smuggling from Bangladesh to Burma , but it is going on, said a trader of Teknaf.
