Maungdaw, Arakan State, Burma: The Burmese Army has been put on high alert following intelligence reports regarding the entry of cadres of under ground organizations who might cause explosions in northern Arakan, said a source close to the army.

Special security measures have been put in place. Check posts have been set up at all important places and intersections. Each check post is manned by army personnel led by an officer to carry out searches in trucks, jeeps, pick ups and private cars.

Special operations are on to nab criminals including carders linked to political parties and underground organizations, said a source close to the police in Maungdaw town.

Priority is being given to the arrest of armed cadres and bombers. The Light Infantry Battalion (LIB) Nos.  223 and 234 have intensified patrolling to arrest extremists in Northern Arakan.

The battalions also deployed on the Burma-Bangladesh border since August 29, 2007.

According to traders in Maungdaw town, Burmese military authorities set up a people's militia in Maungdaw town 0n August 29 to help in law and order enforcement.
