Maungdaw, Arakan State: Eve teasing in a State High School (SHS) in Ngar Khuya village in Maungdaw Township led to a girl and a boy beating up each other on the way home after school. The school authorities got involved and took a bribe from the boys parents, said a schoolteacher.

On November 24 trouble cropped up between a Class IX student Md. Rofique( 20), son of Nurul, hailing from Ngar Khuya village in Maungdaw  Township and a Class IX girl student  Khin Moe Than (16), daughter of U Tha Htun,  belonging to Pru Ma village in Maungdaw Township, the teacher added.

Md. Rofique teased Khin Moe Than on their way home after school was over in the evening on November 24. Khin got angry and scolded him severely. She also hit him with her slippers. Retaliating, Rofique also beat her up severely.

Khin Moe Than along with her parents went to the Nasaka camp No. 4 and lodged a complaint to the Commander of the camp.  Major Sein Win, the Nasaka commander of the camp ordered U Tun Sein, the headmaster of the school and U Zaw Min, the Village Peace and Development Council (VPDC) Chairman of Ngar Khuya village to expel the boy from the school. But, they did not comply with the order as Md. Rofique's father gave kyat 500,000 to them as bribe, a village elder said.

Teachers, members of the parents association and the school controlling committee of Ngar Khya SHS are unhappy as they did not get a proper response from the headmaster and the VPDC chairman.

The villagers believe that the problem will get out of hand and snowball leading to instability in the school in future.
