Teknaf, Bangladesh: A Burmese refugee girl was raped by a local youth on March 25 at around 7 a.m. when she was going to a stream to fetch drinking water. She was accompanied by her younger sister.

The victim was identified as Taslim (15), (not real name), daughter of Md. Toyoub of Dum Dum Mea makeshift camp, or Tal under Teknaf union, Cox's Bazaar district, said Ayoub Majee (shed leader) from the Tal.

The rapist was identified as Sayedullah (20), son of Salamat Ullah, hailing from Dum Dum Mea village of Teknaf union.

The victim accompanied by her younger sister Pervin went to a stream which is about two furlongs from the camp in the forests. When they were filling their pot with water, suddenly, the local youth Sayedullah appeared from hiding and grabbed Taslim while the sister was threatened to leave the place. On being informed by the younger sister, their father accompanied by some other relatives went to the spot. They saw his daughter lying on the ground.

She was admitted to Medecine Sans Frontieres (MSF) clinic.

Her father Toyoub did not file any case against the rapist in the police station for fear of reprisal by the rapist. The rapist Sayedullah is notorious for committing crimes in the area, said another Majee named Ali Akber.

Sayedullah also threatened Toyoub the father of the victim not to file any case against him in the police station or he would face dire consequences, said a refugee from Tal.

Earlier, two or three rape cases occurred in the area while the girls or women went to fetch drinking water from the stream.
