Ukhiya, Bangladesh: An official Burmese refugee was severely beaten up by local goons on February 21 and admitted to Cox’s Bazaar government hospital, said a relative of the victim.
The victim was identified as Hafez Ahamed Majee (40) of Kutupalong camp under Ukhiya Cox’s Bazaar district.

He was beaten up by local goons while he was going to the Ukhiya market by taxi to buy goods for his family members.

According to sources, on the way to market, the taxi was stopped by some local goons, who dragged him out and beat him up severely, and demanded Taka 15,000 for his release. The leader of the goons is Shuna Ali belonging to the area.

The injured refugee was sent to the Research Training and Management (RTM) clinic of the Kutupalong refugee camp as he was suffering from urinary difficulties after he was beaten up. In a critical condition he was sent Cox’s Bazaar government hospital for better treatment, said a family member.
