A Rohingya schoolteacher was detained during a nighttime operation by the Arakan Army (AA) in northern Rakhine, while reports of young women fleeing by sea have heightened concerns over deteriorating security conditions.

According to local residents, AA fighters raided Nasa Parasha village in Thein Taung village tract of Buthidaung Township on March 29 and arrested 34-year-old teacher Maung Maung Soe, also known as Asadullah.

Family members identified him as the son of Surayet Ahmed. His whereabouts remain unknown.

“They came at night and took him away. We don’t know where he is now,” a local resident told KPN on condition of anonymity.

The arrest comes amid growing reports that Rohingya girls and young women in the area are leaving their homes and attempting dangerous sea journeys toward Malaysia.

Community sources cite fear of forced military recruitment by the AA, economic hardship, and financial demands imposed on families as key drivers behind the exodus.

“Many girls are fleeing because they are afraid. Their families cannot meet financial demands, and they see no future here,” a community elder said. “They know the sea journey is dangerous, but they feel they have no alternative.”

The situation in Buthidaung remains volatile, with ongoing detentions and displacement deepening insecurity among Rohingya civilians.
