Rohingya pregnant woman laid to rest after suspected domestic murder

A seven-month pregnant Rohingya woman who was allegedly killed by her husband in a domestic dispute was laid to rest on Wednesday alongside her unborn child.

The 34-year-old victim was buried at the Makam Dagang Muslim cemetery at approximately 11:00 a.m., with more than 50 members of the Rohingya community in attendance.

Kota Tinggi Rohingya community chief Zurahaque Jamaludin, 42, said the community claimed her body from Sultan Ismail Hospital following the completion of a post-mortem examination.

“She had no immediate family members here, so I took responsibility to ensure that she received proper arrangements. Alhamdulillah, everything proceeded smoothly. The body arrived in Kota Tinggi around 6:30 p.m. yesterday,” he said, expressing appreciation to the police and others who assisted in facilitating the burial.

Zurahaque added that the victim could not be repatriated to Myanmar as she was a registered cardholder with the United Nations refugee agency (UNHCR).

The couple’s four-year-old daughter is currently under the temporary care of a Rohingya family in Taman Aman. Extended relatives are expected to assume guardianship at a later stage.

According to Zurahaque, the child—who reportedly suffers from a heart condition—has not been informed of her mother’s death but is aware that her father has been arrested.

“This is the first murder case within our community. We never anticipated such an incident. We leave the matter entirely to the police investigation,” he said.

The incident occurred at a rented house near Kampung Makam.

The victim was discovered dead in her bedroom at approximately 7:00 a.m. on Feb. 13 by her landlord.

Kota Tinggi District Police Chief Superintendent Yusof Othman said jealousy is being investigated as a possible motive.

Police believe the woman was killed at around 3:00 a.m., allegedly after being struck repeatedly on the head with a mortar and pestle.

Her 35-year-old husband has been remanded in police custody until Thursday to assist with ongoing investigations.
