A Rohingya youth sustained critical injuries after a landmine explosion near the Myanmar-Bangladesh border in Ukhiya Upazila Anjuman Para, authorities confirmed on March 26.

The incident occurred at approximately 12:45 pm along the Naf River border zone, according to Lieutenant Colonel Zahirul Islam, commanding officer of the Ukhiya-64 Battalion of Border Guard Bangladesh (BGB).

The injured person, Mohammad Shahidul (25), son of Chan Mia and a resident of Block F-5 of Rohingya Camp No. 16 in Ukhia.

BGB officials stated that Shahidul had reportedly left the refugee camp without authorization and was fishing in the Naf River in the area adjacent to the border.

“Some people, including Shahidul, were fishing near the zero line, when suddenly there was a powerful explosion,”said Lt Col Zahirul Islam, citing local accounts.

The explosion resulted in the traumatic amputation of Shahidul’s right ankle and caused multiple serious injury to other parts of his body.

Local residents conducted an immediate rescue and transported him to a nearby medical facility in Ukhiya. He was later referred to Cox’s Bazar District Sadar Hospital for advanced treatment due to the severity of his injuries.

Authorities have not confirmed the origin of the landmine, though such areas along the border remain highly volatile due to longstanding conflict dynamics. Anjuman Para, authorities confirmed..
